Moon in Astrology – The Queen

Last updated on November 29th, 2019 at 09:09 pm

The Moon in Vedic Astrology is the second most important planet. It is a luminary planet, like the Sun. The mind is considered as the primary signification of Moon. The element of the Moon is water which at the same time signifies the nurturing energy which is crucial for the well being of humans. It is the reason why the Moon is called the Queen or Mother of all planets in Vedic Astrology.

In Sidereal Vedic Astrology, all planetary positions are examined from Moon sign in addition to Ascendant sign because Moon reflects the general mindset, whether it is healthy, productive or not. Hence, all abundance, success, fame, prosperity, and everything positive in life starts from the Moon.

“Once your mindset changes, everything else outside will change along accordingly”

Steve Maraboli

Moon does not even have any enemy planets as Moon loves all the other planets unconditionally. Moreover, it is also considered the most important planet in Vedic Astrology as being closest to Earth – thus many predictions are analyzed mainly from Moon. Moon is also a planet who provides enjoyment in life, thus being exalted in a luxurious sign Taurus, which is ruled by the planet of Luxury – Venus.

Moon as our mind

Sun and Moon work perfectly together as two luminaries – when Sun represents our Soul, then Moon represents our Mind. Sun represents the male gender and hormones, while Moon represents the ones of a female. The strength and dignity of the Moon describe your general mindset and mental state – the stronger the Moon, the stronger the mind. A strong mindset also helps to handle all the challenges and difficulties in life.

Some affliction to the Moon in the birth chart can result in regular depression but it won’t necessarily ruin the healthy mindset of the native. According to that, the assessment of the strength of the Moon is a very complex task and does not depend on a single aspect or placement.

The Moon reflects our mind from the rays of our soul and creates a public image of ourselves in the world – just like Moon reflects the light from the Sun in astronomy.

Unconditionally Caring

A sign of a positive or strong Moon is when a person is extremely caring and selfless. They always want to nurture others unconditionally in order to make them feel better.

Waxing and Waning Moon

Moon is also an extremely mutable planet – it has different phases that are related to the movement of Sun and Moon. Moon signifies the ups and downs in our lives. Additionally, it regulates all the water bodies on Earth with its gravitational force – once the tides rise, and another time they lower.

In addition to that, the cycle of fertility in women is directly related to the Moon and its phases. The full orbit of the Moon around the Earth takes approximately 28 days – the regular cycle of fertility in the female body is also 28 days. All these are signified by the states of Moon, which are waxing and waning. Waxing Moon is considered as an auspicious planet in the birth chart while waning Moon becomes malefic in nature.

Mother and Childhood

Moon also signifies mother. It indicates the relationship between you and your mother, especially during childhood. The dignity of the Moon assesses the level of nurture your mother is able to provide you during childhood.

There is an interesting classic tradition worldwide when a child is born, the local government gives them a silver spoon as a gift. It is especially interesting because silver is signified by the cosmic nurturer, Moon. Moon is the planet that supplies us the vital nutritional ingredient for sustaining our lives – water. There is also a saying – being born with a silver spoon in mouth. That means these children have all the abundant nurturing in their lives from the beginning of life. This is exactly what a strong Moon signifies in life – a happy childhood.

Additional significations regarding The Moon in Astrology

  • Good article. So much could be written on the moon. In Vedic astrology it is considered so important that charts are considered where the position of the moon is used as the ascendant point. The moon waxes and wanes, the tides ebb and flow, and so do our thoughts and feelings. More than any other heavenly body, we feel its influence on a day to day basis!

  • Many thanks for the informative article, Martin.
A slight doubt, you have mentioned that Moon gets exalted in Taurus owing to it being a sign of luxuries. But wouldn’t it rather be because the Moon is in a such a close relationship to the Earth, it gets exalted in the most earthly sign?
